VT Regional One Act Festival @ NCUHS

Yesterday, North Country hosted the VT Regional One Act Festival for the first time ever.

They welcomed students from Lamoille, People’s Academy & BFA Fairfax (unfortunately Milton couldn’t make it due to weather).

North Country’s production of “Just Like I Wanted” contained some profanity, themes of drug use, and discussions about suicide. The script was chosen by the students, who felt it was important to tell the story, to talk about subjects like mental health struggles and suicide, which are topics that impact teens from all walks of life. Taryn and the students realized early on that their story would hit heavy and hit home. They were very thoughtful in how they presented these difficult topics, writing a pre-performance disclaimer as well as being equipped to work through Q&A discussions afterwards, with the support of mental health professionals. They shared their plans with me and asked me to join discussions and offer suggestions and support as they prepared. I was also invited to hold workshops for the students attending the festival, to share NorahBeads, local mental health resources, and a message of hope and encouragement to anyone who struggles with mental health or thoughts of suicide. Also preset that day, were professionals from Northeast Kingdom Human Services, School Guidance Counselors, extra faculty, and teachers to be available to support anyone who needed it. The day was a wonderful success, all schools performed so well, and I was really proud of the work that the North Country crew did. Thank you so much for including me, and for your thoughtful process, sensitivity and professionalism.

NCUHS Drama Company will also perform their show for parents & the community next Wednesday, April 2nd @ 6pm in the auditorium.
